Overview

Discover Solo Grano, an independent Italian restaurant at 21-23 Wheeler Gate, Nottingham NG1 2NA, United Kingdom, bringing handmade pasta, Neapolitan-style pizza, and Mediterranean flavours to the heart of the city. From a food blogger’s perspective, Solo Grano succeeds because it focuses on fundamentals: fresh dough, pasta made in-house, quality ingredients, and straightforward Italian cooking rather than an oversized menu. The restaurant also holds a 5 food-hygiene rating, adding confidence to its strong reputation for freshness.

The menu covers fresh pasta, pizza, focaccia, salads, starters, sandwiches, and desserts, with vegetarian and vegan options available. Pricing sits comfortably in the mid-range: Napolitana Pasta is around £10.50, Carbonara about £13.90, and Di Pollo around £14.90 on current delivery listings. Delivery, takeaway, reservations, table service, and indoor seating are available, while some listings also note outdoor seating.

A great introduction to Solo Grano in Nottingham is the Napolitana Pasta. Fresh pasta is combined with garlic, extra-virgin olive oil, cherry tomatoes, basil, pecorino, Parmesan, and bocconcini. The result is simple but effective: bright tomato flavour, aromatic basil, salty cheese, and pasta with the satisfying texture that only freshly made dough can provide. It is also one of the restaurant’s most frequently ordered dishes.

For something richer, the Di Pollo combines chicken breast, smoked bacon, mushrooms, mascarpone, thyme, pecorino, and Parmesan. Creamy and savoury without losing its Italian character, it is particularly suited to diners looking for a substantial main course. Pizza lovers should consider the Prosciutto Di Parma, another popular choice that showcases the restaurant’s emphasis on fresh dough and traditional Italian ingredients.

Customer feedback reinforces the restaurant’s strengths. One diner described it as “small, cosy and the food is amazing,” while another praised the freshly prepared pizza and service. Reviews regularly highlight the homemade pasta, pizza dough, friendly staff, and good value. A minor limitation is the compact dining area; some guests note that indoor seating and outdoor tables can feel tight when the restaurant is busy.

The atmosphere at Solo Grano feels intimate and informal rather than formal or luxurious. Its central Nottingham location makes it convenient for lunch, casual dinners, or a relaxed meal while exploring the city. Vegetarian and vegan selections broaden its appeal, while desserts such as Tiramisu, panna cotta, and a sweet Nutella-and-mascarpone calzone provide an indulgent finish.

For diners comparing the best restaurants in Nottingham for authentic local dining experiences, Solo Grano deserves attention for its handmade pasta, freshly prepared pizza, fair pricing, and cosy independent character. We had a lovely meal full of fresh flavors. The texture of the pasta and pizza crust were perfect!

We visited recently and overall it was an average experience. The pizzas were the best part. The dough was well made, really good and exactly how a pizza crust should be. However, the Spinach pizza had so little spinach that you could barely taste it. We also ordered two pasta dishes. Since the pasta is homemade, we expected it to be much better, but it was very doughy and neither of us enjoyed it. Both dishes also came with the same pasta shape without anyone asking our preference or letting us know beforehand. The service was disappointing. No one was attentive we even had to ask for the menus ourselves. Everything took a long time, including the takeaway boxes at the end of the meal. The restaurant (upstairs seats) was also very hot, and the chairs felt loose and unstable, making them uncomfortable to sit on. Overall, the pizza was good, but the pasta, service, and atmosphere didn’t make for a great experience.
